Gali Janardhana Reddy (Kannada: ಗಾಲಿ ಜನಾರ್ದನ ರೆಡ್ಡಿ; born 11 January 1967) is a Indian politician with the Bharatiya Janata Party and one of the richest politicians of Karnataka. He has been implicated in the massive illegal mining scandal in Bellary and the related Belekeri port scam. Janardhana Reddy is at the center of the illegal iron-ore mining controversy in the Karnataka government.[1]
In 2009, a Supreme Court of India-appointed central empowerment committee recommended action against Reddy-owned Obulapuram Mining Company.[2] An FIR in the case was filed with the Central Bureau of Investigation. Also, the Lokayukta or ombudsman for Karnataka, retired Justice of the Supreme Court Santosh Hegde, had also indited him and his two powerful brothers, all of whom were cabinet ministers at the time, in the mining scam.

 Life

Janardhana Reddy and his equally powerful brothers G. Karunakara Reddy and G. Somashekara Reddy were born into the family of police constable Chenga Reddy, and grew up in Bellary. He and his brothers transformed themselves in less than a decade from obscure activists for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., into political bosses who directly or indirectly control three state ministries and dominate local government in the Bellary district, which holds the state’s richest iron ore deposits.[1]
Janardhana never went to college. He came into the limelight during the Lok Sabha elections 1999, when the Reddy brothers worked for Sushma Swaraj after she stood as a long-shot candidate in Bellary, against Sonia Gandhi. Though Sushma lost, she remained a patron of the Reddy's, and visits Bellary every year.
Janardhana Reddy was finally arrested by CBI on 5 September 2011 at his residence in Bellary and is taken to the Capital of Neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh. After the CBI court heard his lawyers representations, he along with his brother-in-law was remanded for 14 days and sent to Chanchalguda Jail, and he is allotted Prisoner Number 697.
On his first night in jail, he was offered the dal and rice given to any inmate, but refused it, opting instead for some chicken biryani and fruit that he brought along from home. He slept on the floor. [3]

Dynamics in BJP politics

Janardhana Reddy is a prominent and controversial figure in BJP politics at the state and central levels.[1] The state government headed by D. V. Sadananda Gowda, requiring the support of a group of legislators aligned with Reddy, was in a precarious position in mid-2009.[4] In a compromise with Yeddyurappa, the Reddys also forced the removal of a Karnataka minister Shobha Karandlaje and chief secretary (IAS officer) V.P. Baligar.[4][5]
Sushma Swaraj is said to have stepped in to prevent the removal of the Reddy brothers from the Karnataka ministry in mid-2010, after the national uproar due to illegal iron ore mining.[6]
The BJP is to be in a state of indecision whether to risk the stability of the only BJP state government in the South or be seen as compromising on their value system.[7]

Involvement in Andhra Pradesh politics

Born into a Telugu-speaking family, Janardhana Reddy also wields considerable influence in In neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. He was reported to be close to former chief minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and his son Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.[8][9][10] Jaganmohan Reddy is reported to have a business interest in Brahmani Steels.[11] The loss of political support resulting from the death of Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has increased the scrutiny of Janardhana Reddy's mining activities.[12]

Business history, growth of influence and wealth

In 1998, Janardhana Reddy's finance company, Ennoble India Savings, collapsed, leaving unpaid debts of over Rs. 200 crores.[13][14] However, by 2008, he and his wife declared assets of Rs. 115 crores.[15] According to Tehelka:
In May 2009, the family spent an estimated Rs 20 crore on a wedding. The helicopters owned by the family ferried over 10,000 guests to the wedding even as 500 airconditioners helped them forget outside temperatures of 42 degree Celsius. A month later, the brothers donated a Rs 42 crore diamond-studded crown to a temple deity.[15]
In 2004, the Reddy brothers obtained their first lease for an iron mine in 2004. Since then their rise has been meteoric.[1]

 Arrest

He was arrested on September 5, 2011 by the CBI and moved to Chenchalguda jail for judicial remand .[16] He is involved in the illegal mining of iron ore near Bellary region of Karnataka state.
